“Things That Are Survival for Us”

Carol Jean Crooks was a Black dyke. Born October 12, 1946, she grew up on the streets of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, and died alone in early 2022. She worked and fought all her life in relative obscurity. Though most of her work wasn’t legal, her fights created a better and fairer world.

H. “Rap” Brown stands atop a car in the African American section of Cambridge, Md., July 24, 1967 delivering a fiery black nationalist speech denouncing white dominated society and urging African Americans to fight back. Later that night, Brown was wounded by shotgun pellets before he left town. In the early morning hours, someone set fire to an African American school that ended up burning two square blocks while the town’s firemen stood by. Maryland Gov. Spiro T Agnew immediately denounced Brown and he was soon charged with inciting to riot, along with other crimes. The National Guard was again called out to occupy the town. Brown faced other legal woes, but charges in the Maryland case were ultimately dropped several years later. The incident marked the end of the mass civil rights movement in Cambridge that began in 1962.
